Questions I Would Ask My Wedding Photographer Before Hiring

Choosing your wedding photographer isn’t about finding the prettiest Instagram grid — it’s about finding someone who can handle pressure, guide you confidently, deliver consistently beautiful work, and most importantly loves their job and what drives them.

If you’re getting married in Longmont, Boulder, Lyons, or Estes Park, these are the exact questions you should ask before signing a contract. In my opinion though the most important question is, “Why?” Why are you a wedding photographer? What got you into this business?

These are the questions I never get asked but think it’s the most important question. The documentarian that is coming to document your day, shouldn’t be cynical or burnt out. So here are the questions to ask if you want to hire an artist that loves their job:

What inspires you?

What are your favorite moments of a wedding day?

What do you love about being a wedding photographer?

How do you stay motivated towards the end of wedding season?

Other than these, the questions below are great to find out if you’ve got a professional on your hands.

1. Have You Shot Weddings Like Mine Or At Our Venue Before?

Not all weddings are the same.

Ask about experience with:

  • Outdoor ceremonies (common in Boulder County)

  • Mountain lighting and fast weather changes

  • Timeline-heavy days

  • Low-light receptions

  • Specific Cultural Traditions

A photographer who regularly works in Colorado’s unpredictable light will be calm and prepared — even if clouds roll in or timelines shift.

2. What’s Your Backup Plan (Equipment & Emergencies)?

Ivy Bencheck- photographer, has two camera bodies on hip holster, ready for summer wedding in Colorado.

This is a big one.

A professional photographer should always have:

Backup camera bodies

  • Multiple lenses

  • A mountain of memory cards

  • Image backups during and after the wedding

You can ask directly:

“What happens if your camera fails or you’re unable to attend?”

The answer should be confident and specific.

3. How Long Does Editing and Delivery Take?

Editing isn’t just slapping on a preset — it’s a thoughtful, time-intensive process.

Typical timelines:

  • Sneak peeks: ~ 1 day to 1 week

  • Full gallery: ~1–4 months

Ask:

  • How many images you’ll receive

  • How they’re delivered (online gallery, downloads)

  • Whether albums or prints are available

4. What’s Included in the Contract?

Gay couple holding marriage license with their dogs as witnesses. The dogs paw prints on bottom corner of paper. Couple holding license up close to camera while kissing behind it. Telluride, CO.

Before you sign, understand:

Hours of coverage

  • Second photographer options and other add ons

  • Overtime rates/ travel fees

  • Payment schedules

  • Cancellation or rescheduling policies

Colorado weather is unpredictable — flexibility matters.

5. How Do You Communicate Before and After the Wedding?

Strong communication = less stress.

Ask:

  • Do you offer a Welcome/ What to expect guide?

  • Will you help with the timeline?

  • Do you check in before the wedding?

  • Are planning calls included?

The best photographers act as guides, not just observers.

Why These Questions Matter

Your photographer affects:

  • Your timeline

  • Your stress level

  • Your memories

Asking the right questions helps you choose someone who’s skilled, prepared, and genuinely invested in your experience.
